Key Information

SATs

On this page you will find useful information to help your child with their SATs revision.

Before the test

Please remember that it’s important that children practise and try their best but that we are always proud of our children and their hard work in school regardless of their SATs results. The key messages we want our children to think about on the run up to SATs are:

“Never underestimate the power of sleep”

Having a good sleep pattern helps us concentrate and focus for longer, and makes us less irritable. Making sure you get enough sleep in the run up to SATs is really important.

“You have already made great progress”

Your children have been working hard all year and we can see the progress that they have made. Acknowledging this helps children to feel confident before sitting the tests and shows them that with hard work they can improve and learn new things – the key thing we want them to take with them to secondary school.

“Don’t break from routine”

Please don’t start cancelling clubs or normal after-school activities on the run up to SATs. Keep the routine as usual as this helps to reassure children that these are normal tests.

DURING THE TEST

Label

Underline or label key words to help break down the question and focus on the most important information making it easier to understand what is being asked.

Clarify

Ask a teacher to read you the question – it helps to hear it out loud. If the teacher is not allowed to read the question to you, why don’t you read it to them?

Draw

Will drawing the question help you to realise which steps you need to take? This may help you visualize the question making it easier to understand.

Trial

Have a go – try different ways to approach the question and write them down so that you can see if this is the correct way to approach the problem.

Move On

If you still aren’t sure, don’t dwell on a question – move onto the next one and come back later with a fresh perspective and clearer mind.
